The OR Tambo District Commissioner, Major General Modishana, has praised the Qumbu police for the arrest of a key suspect linked to a series of serious crimes.

The South African Police Service has initiated a manhunt for at least two suspects following the fatal shooting of a police Warrant Officer in Ngqeleni under Nyandeni Local Municipality on Monday, September 30, 2024.

At approximately 14:45, it is alleged that two men, one of whom was armed, confronted the 59-year-old officer on Chaplain Street. Tragically, the officer was fatally shot during the incident, and his service pistol was subsequently stolen by the assailants.

Police officials are urging anyone with information regarding the suspects to come forward and assist the investigation by contacting their nearest police station or reporting information anonymously through Crime Stop at 08600 10111.

Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene, expressed condolences to the officer’s family, characterizing the shooting as an “attack on the authority of the state.” She assured the public that law enforcement officials are committed to bringing the perpetrators to justice and emphasized the need for police officers to remain vigilant. “Criminals are bold and brazen and would not think twice to attack us,” Lt Gen Mene stated.

As the manhunt continues, the community remains on alert, and police are determined to restore a sense of safety following this tragic incident.
