The Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA) confirmed that the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium will host South Africa and Zambia on 15 November in Gqeberha. The match forms part of Bafana Bafana’s AFCON 2025 preparations. It is expected to draw thousands of supporters to the Bay.
What Happened
MBDA said fans can expect a full day of entertainment. Food traders will operate throughout the event. The build-up will include music and fan activities. The stadium recently hosted the Springboks vs Italy Test match. It also staged a sold-out Kaizer Chiefs vs Stellenbosch semi-final. The DHL Stormers are scheduled to play there in December. Officials said this latest fixture strengthens the stadium’s growing reputation as a premier sports venue.
Official Response
MBDA CEO Anele Qaba said the match offers significant economic and social benefits for the city. “The impact of high-profile events in the Bay is undeniable. Our ailing hospitality and tourism industry, which employs many young people, will benefit directly and indirectly from the influx of visitors,” he said.
Qaba added that the stadium’s success comes from deliberate relationship-building with major sporting bodies. “When the opportunity arose with SAFA, we were ready to step forward.”
He also assured fans that safety and security measures remain a top priority, urging supporters to arrive early to enjoy entertainment and ease congestion.
Nelson Mandela Bay Executive Mayor Babalwa Lobishe welcomed the match.
“The Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium continues to position our Metro as a world-class sporting destination,” she said. “I call on all residents to fill up the stands, wear their colours with pride, and show the world that Nelson Mandela Bay is the home of champions.”
Community Impact
Local tourism and hospitality businesses expect increased bookings, foot traffic, and revenue. Traders and small enterprises at the stadium will also benefit from match-day crowds. The event is expected to boost confidence in Nelson Mandela Bay as a key sports and entertainment hub.
