On 21 October 2025, South Africa’s Higher Education and Training Minister, Buti Manamela, met with Dutch Minister Koen Becking to review progress on their 2023 education partnership. The talks, held in Pretoria, focused on expanding cooperation in Heritage Studies, seafarers placements, and manufacturing sector support.

What Happened
Minister Manamela and Minister Becking discussed key areas to deepen collaboration between South Africa and the Netherlands. They reviewed progress since signing the 2023 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and explored opportunities for South African students to study Heritage Studies at Dutch universities.
The meeting also touched on strengthening ties with the City of Rotterdam to provide placements for South African seafarers and boost cooperation in the manufacturing sector.

Minister Becking plans to visit the University of Pretoria on 23 October 2025 to meet the Faculty of Education and discuss teacher education programs, signaling further engagement between the two nations.
