In a major shake-up, Mamelodi Sundowns has announced the appointment of Miguel De Azevedo Cardoso as the new Head Coach of the Club, effective immediately. The move comes after a string of unsatisfactory results, despite the commitment of the Sundowns Board to give the previous coaching team an opportunity to lead the Club.
Coach Cardoso, a seasoned tactician with a wealth of experience in top-tier European leagues, joins Sundowns from Espérance Sportive de Tunis, where he led the team to the finals of the 2023/24 CAF Champions League. He will be assisted by three of his trusted lieutenants, Fabio Fernandes, Pedro Azevedo, and João Araújo.
Coach Cardoso’s impressive CV boasts stints at some of Europe’s biggest clubs, including Porto, Braga, Deportivo La Coruna, Celta Vigo, AEK Athens, Nantes, and Shaktar Donetsk. His experience and expertise are expected to bring a new level of sophistication and success to the Sundowns squad.
Meanwhile, coaches Steve Komphela and Kennedy Mweene will remain part of the Club’s new Technical Team, providing continuity and stability.
The Sundowns family has expressed gratitude to outgoing coaches Manqoba Mngqithi and Wendell Robinson for their loyal service to the Club over the years. The players will meet the new coaching team when they return to training on Wednesday.
