Former Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder George Maluleka has retired from professional football at the age of 36. He confirmed the decision after leaving Kruger United, where he reportedly went months without pay. His case has now been filed with the PSL’s Dispute Resolution Chamber.
What Happened?
George Maluleka announced his retirement following a difficult spell at Motsepe Foundation Championship side Kruger United FC. The club allegedly failed to pay him for several months, which pushed him to seek legal recourse.
Maluleka, known for his playmaking career across top-flight clubs, chose to step away from the game while pursuing justice through formal football structures.
He has also submitted his case to the South African Football Players Union (SAFPU) for support.
Official Response
A SAFPU representative welcomed Maluleka’s decision to escalate the matter.
“No player should go unpaid. We are committed to ensuring George’s case is handled fairly,” the official said.
Close associates say Maluleka wanted closure and dignity after contributing to South African football for nearly two decades.
Community Impact
Fans across the country praised Maluleka for his professionalism throughout his career. The case also renewed debate on financial stability and governance in lower-tier clubs.
Youth coaches say the incident emphasized the importance of player welfare and stronger oversight to protect professionals in the league system.
