EFF Commander-in-Chief Julius Malema has made serious allegations involving Minister of Water and Sanitation, Senzo Mchunu, and his Chief of Staff, Nkabinde. Speaking publicly, Malema questioned how a former Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) officer previously involved in a case where Mchunu was allegedly a “person of interest” could now serve in such a high-level political role.
What Happened
During a public address, Malema exposed what he called “deep-rooted cronyism” within government appointments. He alleged that Nkabinde, who is now Minister Mchunu’s Chief of Staff, had previously been part of an IPID investigation that named Mchunu as a “person of interest.”
Malema implied that the appointment may be more than coincidental, asking pointedly:
“How does a former IPID officer involved in that case become the Minister’s Chief of Staff?”
He went on to suggest the possibility of “state positions being used to repay favours.”
Official Response
As of publication, Minister Senzo Mchunu and his office have not issued a public response to Malema’s claims. No formal comment has been made by Nkabinde or the Department of Water and Sanitation.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has also not responded to queries regarding the matter or the alleged past investigation involving the minister.
Community Impact
Malema’s comments have reignited concerns over transparency and ethics in senior government appointments. Political analysts say the claim if substantiated could raise serious questions about conflict of interest and abuse of state power.
Social media users reacted swiftly, with some calling for an independent inquiry and others urging the minister to step aside pending clarification.
