Mahindra South Africa has officially launched a cutting-edge 14,000 m² vehicle assembly facility at Dube TradePort, marking its 30th anniversary in the South African market. The plant represents a major expansion in production capacity and technological advancement for the automaker.
The new facility replaces Mahindra’s original semi-knocked-down (SKD) plant established in 2018. Built to global manufacturing standards, it features advanced quality control systems, expanded production lines, and dedicated customisation zones tailored for South African consumers.

With production capacity exceeding 1,000 Pik Up single- and double-cab models each month—and potential to scale up—the facility sets a strong foundation for future model rollouts. It is engineered for flexibility, readiness to handle new Mahindra models in years ahead, and an increasing share of locally sourced components.

Key Figures at the Launch:
- Rajesh Gupta, CEO of Mahindra South Africa, emphasized that the growth reflects increasing demand for locally assembled Pik Up models and underscores the brand’s commitment to quality and scale.
- EThekwini Mayor Cyril Xaba highlighted the facility as a milestone for regional investment, local job creation, and industrial partnerships.
- KZN MEC for Economic Development Rev. Musa Zondi praised the move as aligned with provincial strategies for economic empowerment.
- Sachin Arolkar, Head of International Operations at Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd, added that South Africa remains a cornerstone market in Mahindra’s global growth plan.
According to Bloomberg, the new plant increases capacity by two-thirds—from 900 to around 1,500 vehicles monthly—and positions Mahindra to assemble other models, such as the Bolero and Veero.

What It Means for South Africa
