Magwa tea plantation, is reputed to be the largest tea plantation in the Southern Hemisphere, covering a total of just over 2000 hectares of commercial tea plantations; Magwa Tea Estate with 1,703HA and Majola Tea Estate with 385HA. These teas are grown in the Mpondo Kingdom along the Wild Coast of the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa.
The Magwa tea plantation was established in the mid-sixties by the late Mpondo King Botha Manzolwandle Sigcau as part of a program to generate employment in rural areas. Over and above the job creation opportunities, the area was regarded as suitable for tea development because of its soil conditions and unique climate. The Magwa Tea Estate forms part of the broader Lambasi area totaling over 10 000HA with spectacular natural features including waterfalls and indigenous and planted forests.
The Magwa Tea Estate has won in the past – The International Award for Commercial Prestige in 1991 (Spain) and International Quality Award in 1993 (Spain).
The Majola Tea Estate, established in the late sixties, has organic certification from both the National Organic Program (USDA Organic) and the European Standard (ECOCERT), reflecting our tea estate’s ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship.
