Lusikisiki K9 Unit and Crime Prevention team arrested a 27-year-old man found with an unlicensed firearm during routine duties in Port St Johns.

The arrest took place around 08:00 during routine escort duties in Port St Johns. Police officers spotted the suspect, who is from Cwebeni locality, and found him in possession of a shotgun with an intact serial number, along with seven live rounds of ammunition.

The suspect was immediately arrested for being in possession of a firearm without a valid licence. He was detained at Port St John’s police station and is expected to appear before the Port St Johns Magistrate’s Court.

Further investigation revealed that the firearm is registered to a 74-year-old man from the same area but had never been reported as stolen. Authorities are now probing how the weapon ended up in the suspect’s hands.

OR Tambo District Commissioner, Major General Norman Modishana, praised the officers involved for their vigilance and ongoing efforts to rid communities of illegal firearms.

“We commend our members for their dedication in tackling the spread of unlicensed weapons. Their work helps ensure the safety of our people,” he said.
