Leaders from across the country gathered in the Eastern Cape to mark the Lurwayizo Commemoration, a ceremony that honoured the heroes of South Africa’s liberation struggle while also shining a light on ongoing challenges in service delivery and infrastructure.
In his opening address, Amathole District Municipality Executive Mayor Cllr. Anele Ntsangani reminded attendees of the historical importance of the Battle of Lurwayizo, calling it a moment that should never be forgotten.
“This battle is a key moment in our nation’s journey to freedom. We must protect and share this heritage with future generations,” said Ntsangani.
The event brought together government officials and members of the public to reflect on the past and engage on current issues. Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane used the platform to highlight one of the province’s most pressing concerns — deteriorating road infrastructure.
“Our roads are in a deplorable state, and it’s such challenges that are hindering development in our province,” said Premier Mabuyane. “We need the national government to hear our plea and step in to help restore our road network.”
As the commemoration continued, attention also turned to the broader issue of service delivery in rural areas. Deputy President Paul Mashatile, who was in attendance, echoed the need for action and pledged government support to ensure communities receive the services they deserve.
While the day was one of remembrance, it also served as a powerful reminder that the struggle for justice continues , not only in remembering the past, but also in building a future where basic services and infrastructure support every citizen.
