Deputy President Paul Mashatile, joined by Eastern Cape Premier Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane, paid tribute today to the fallen heroes of the Battle of Lurhwayizo, marking 38 years since one of the most defining moments in the fight against apartheid.
A solemn wreath-laying ceremony was held at the site to honour the MK soldiers who bravely stood against apartheid forces during the fierce 1987 confrontation. The Deputy President also unveiled a commemorative stone, marking the site as a lasting symbol of courage and sacrifice.
Now an official heritage site, Lurhwayizo stands as a vital part of the Eastern Cape’s Liberation Heritage Route, a recognition of the region’s deep-rooted role in South Africa’s path to freedom. Known as the Home of Legends, the province continues to celebrate the contributions of those who fought for justice and equality.
“This ground carries the spirit of those who never gave up on the dream of a free South Africa,” said Mashatile. “It is our duty to preserve their memory and draw strength from their bravery.”
