Eastern Cape MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Zolile Williams, has warned communities to avoid starting any fires as the province remains at high risk of further veld fires. The alert comes after major fires affected parts of Nelson Mandela Bay, Kouga, and Koukamma.
What Happened
On 11 January 2026, MEC Williams urged residents to refrain from lighting any form of fires, including for cooking or braais, as fire conditions remain severe.
“We implore our communities not to start any form of fires, be it for braai purposes, due to the prevailing high risk of more veld fires,” said MEC Williams.
Recent fires have scorched large areas of farmland and open fields, placing pressure on emergency services. Although no loss of life or structural damage has been confirmed, the situation remains volatile.
Current Conditions
Emergency teams remain on high alert across affected areas:
- Nelson Mandela Metro
- Kouga Local Municipality
- Koukamma Local Municipality
In Humansdorp, local fire and disaster teams continue containment efforts. MEC Williams confirmed that no immediate danger to lives or infrastructure has been reported so far.
Eskom has attended to damaged substations and power lines in Kouga, restoring services to affected areas.
Public Appeal and Acknowledgements
MEC Williams expressed deep appreciation for the coordinated firefighting efforts led by:
- Local fire departments
- Disaster response teams
- Farming communities
- Fire Protection Associations
- NGOs and community-based organisations
“The heroic efforts of our teams are a source of strength and encouragement to mitigate further damage. Our fire-fighting resources are already strained,” he added.
The MEC also extended sympathies to communities in the Western Cape facing similar fire threats.
Safety Reminder
Residents are reminded:
- Do not light any outdoor fires (including braais)
- Report fire outbreaks immediately to local disaster or fire services
- Avoid entering affected areas unless authorised
- Follow municipal safety alerts and restrictions
