GBV Command Centre stays open 24/7 this festive season

The Department of Social Development has confirmed that its Gender-Based Violence Command Centre (GBVCC) will remain fully operational throughout the 2025 festive season. The centre provides free, confidential, round-the-clock help to survivors of Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF).

What services does the GBV Command Centre provide?

The GBVCC offers support every day of the year, including:

    • 24/7 trauma counselling (online and telephonic)
    • Immediate referrals to Social Workers and shelters
    • Links to police and law enforcement services
    • Psychosocial support for GBV survivors
    • Help for anyone at risk of abuse

Why is the festive season high-risk?

According to the department, GBVF cases tend to spike in December. GBVCC Manager Carol Tladi says this period places women and children at greater risk due to:

    • Increased alcohol use
    • Higher rates of drug use (legal and illegal)
    • Family tensions and reduced mobility
    • Perpetrators taking advantage of relaxed routines

“Our data consistently shows that cases of gender-based violence increase during the festive season,” Tladi noted.

She reassured the public that the centre is fully staffed and ready to respond to the expected increase in demand.

    How can people access help?

For free assistance, contact the GBV Command Centre using any of the following methods:

    Method Details
    Call 0800 428 428
    Dial from cellphone 1207867#
Send a “Please Call Me” 1207867#

Help prevent GBVF in your community

The department is urging all South Africans to remain vigilant, support survivors, and report any incidents of GBV. Community members, families and individuals are encouraged to:

    • Speak out against abuse
    • Report perpetrators
    • Support victims seeking help
    • Know where to get assistance
