The Nyandeni Local Municipality, working with the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), conducted a full lifesaving assessment for beach lifeguards at Mthatha Mouth in Ward 26, 8 November 2025. The session aimed to ensure that the team is fully prepared to respond to emergencies during the festive season and other high-risk periods.
What Happened
The municipality and NSRI gathered lifeguards for a series of practical rescue tests along the Mthatha Mouth coastline. The drills focused on swimming strength, rescue technique, and response speed. Moreover, officials said the aim was to confirm that lifeguards can safely save lives under real beach conditions.
Official Response
Municipal leaders said the programme ensures community safety and reduces drowning incidents. “Our goal is to make sure that abantu bethu bahlala bekhuselekile. These assessments help us identify whether lifeguards are truly ready to save lives,” the municipality noted.
The NSRI added that joint training strengthens coordination between local teams and professional rescuers.
Community Impact
The initiative is expected to improve safety for residents and visitors who use the Mthatha Mouth beach. Furthermore, the municipality hopes the programme will reduce the number of drowning cases recorded along the Nyandeni coastline. Parents and beachgoers have welcomed the move, saying it gives them confidence ahead of the busy holiday season.
