On Tuesday, Ndimakude Library came alive as learners from Walter Cingo Senior Secondary, Ekuphumleni Junior Secondary and Ndaliso Senior Secondary schools gathered to celebrate International Literacy Day through a spirited competition aimed at promoting reading, writing and cultural appreciation.
The programme featured contests in Book Review (English and isiXhosa), Izaci namaQhalo esiXhosa, Word Puzzle, and an English Quiz for visually impaired learners. Each category saw enthusiastic participation from learners eager to claim the coveted first positions.
The winners were announced as follows:
- Word Puzzle: Ayanda Mgqibela (Ekuphumleni J.S.)
- Quiz (Visually Impaired): Siphamandla Mbudane
- Book Review (isiXhosa): Onele Vivi (Walter Cingo S.S.)
- Book Review (English): Phumla Mtshengu (Walter Cingo S.S.)
- Izaci namaQhalo: Siyambonga Mavuka (Walter Cingo S.S.)
The event drew a strong audience, including Ward Councillor Ms. Z. Mageza, municipal officials led by Senior Manager Ms. Z. Masumpa, respected authors Mr. Ndleleni and Ms. Mbala, educators from nearby schools, and community members who came to support the learners.
In her address, Ms. Masumpa applauded the participants for their passion and resilience, noting that literacy is not only about reading and writing but also about preserving culture and empowering communities.
The winners will advance to represent their schools in the upcoming district-level competition, with the date and venue to be announced soon.
