On 16 October 2025, Eastern Cape MEC for Agriculture Nonceba Kontsiwe, MEC for Social Development Bukiwe Fanta, and Nelson Mandela Bay Executive Mayor Babalwa Lobishe visited JK Zondi Senior Primary School in Gqeberha to celebrate World Food Day 2025. The event celebrated the importance of food security, nutrition, and youth involvement in sustainable farming.

What Happened

Learners took part in a hands-on gardening session, where they planted beetroot seedlings and learned how to care for crops. The school also received gardening tools and supplies to help expand its food garden and ensure sustainability throughout the year.

As a result, the activity strengthened the link between classroom learning and practical agricultural education.

Speaking at the event, MEC Nonceba Kontsiwe encouraged learners and teachers to continue developing their garden. “Your garden is more than just a food source, it is a learning tool and a symbol of self-reliance,” said MEC Kontsiwe. She also highlighted the garden’s role in promoting food security and community resilience across the province.

Mayor Babalwa Lobishe praised the initiative, noting that partnerships between government, schools, and communities are vital in achieving Zero Hunger.

Community Impact

The school garden project promotes healthy eating, environmental awareness, and skills development among learners. In addition, it supports government efforts to fight hunger and poverty under the #ZeroHunger and #Siyasebenza programmes.

The visit ended with a message of unity and collaboration, reinforcing the theme of “Growing a Better Future Together.”
