“The huge challenge in farming today is equipment,’’ says Phathuvuyo Maquthu a young and motivated farmer grown up in rural areas of Jali at Bizana.
The looming farmer has been in the farming business for three years, focusing on vegetables. He started the farming as a hobby at his home in small garden but then realised he can make profit out of it. Later he started selling his vegetables in the village and expanded his market segments to Bizana town.
Despite that his farming is growing day by day, but not having a startup capital or assistance from family members or anyone who has more experience in farming limits him to peruse his dream. ‘’Farming without proper or quality fencing is one the biggest challenges I face,’’ says Phathuvuyo. He further mentioned that animals are destructive while birds are unstoppable digging up seeds because of poor fencing.
The young farmer is committed and passionate about his work. His dream is to see his farming developing, creating jobs, and ending poverty in his village. While majority of youth undermine farming business others sense opportunities for the future. Phathuvuyo is looking forward in identifying opportunities, growing, and developing his entrepreneurial farming while taking calculated risk in the process.
