KwaZulu-Natal Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (EDTEA) hosted a major clean-up and environmental awareness campaign at Donnybrook on 21 November 2025. The event brought together all Harry Gwala District municipalities to restore areas around Donnybrook Primary School and strengthen community responsibility.
What Happened?
Opened with a large clean-up operation at Donnybrook Primary School, where volunteers cleared litter, removed waste from illegal dumping sites, and restored the school’s surroundings. The initiative formed part of a united district effort to promote better environmental practices.
Several partners joined the campaign, including Forestry, KZN Wildlife, Bambanani Green Solutions, Umngeni Water, and the wider Donnybrook community. Moreover, EDTEA teams provided on-site education on safe waste management and the importance of reducing single-use plastics.
Umngeni Water officials also stressed the need to prevent pollution from entering local rivers and water systems, warning that contaminated water endangers both households and the ecosystem.
Official Response
Harry Gwala District representative Councilor B.R. Memela said clean communities help protect public health and reduce long-term environmental risks.
Deputy Mayor Councilor Kholeka Hadebe urged residents to continue the effort.
“We all share this responsibility,” she said. “A cleaner environment starts with each of us, and we must sustain this work beyond one day.”
EDTEA officials added that residents should follow safer daily habits — from proper waste disposal to recycling and wearing protective gear during community clean-ups.
Community Impact
The campaign drew strong support from residents, school staff and local organisations. Parents expressed hope that the effort of a long-term shift in keeping learning spaces safe and hygienic.
Environmental groups within the district say the clean-up strengthens community pride and builds momentum for future green programs. The initiative also pointed out the importance of shared action across municipalities.
