Work is underway on a 39.4 km stretch of the N2 between KwaBhaca and the Ngcweleni River. The South African National Roads Agency SOC Ltd (SANRAL) is leading this multi-year road rehabilitation project to improve regional infrastructure and grow the local economy.
What Happened
A major upgrade on the N2 is progressing between KwaBhaca and the Ngcweleni River. SANRAL is rolling out this 39.4 km project as part of a broader national plan to improve safety and road access across the Eastern Cape.
So far, the project has created over 230 jobs. At the same time, 39 small, medium, and micro enterprises (SMMEs) from the Umzimvubu area have secured subcontracts. This has opened up new opportunities for local businesses and workers, offering long-term benefits beyond construction.
Official Response
SANRAL stated that the roadwork is part of its long-term strategy to boost economic development through infrastructure upgrades. While the improvements are welcomed, they come with short-term challenges for motorists.
Officials urged drivers to prepare for Stop/Go traffic controls. They asked the public to cooperate with road workers, follow all signs, and adjust their travel plans accordingly.
“Motorists are advised to plan their travel time accordingly, follow signage, and exercise caution when passing through construction zones,” SANRAL said in a public statement.
Community Impact
Local businesses and residents are already seeing the positive effects of the project. The participation of nearly 40 SMMEs reflects SANRAL’s commitment to local empowerment and inclusive development.
However, daily commuters have raised concerns about traffic delays. Stop/Go systems operate at different times during the day, which can slow down travel. Authorities continue to remind drivers to stay alert and patient to ensure everyone’s safety on the road.
