KSD Municipality, in collaboration with PETCO (Polyethylene Terephthalate Plastic Recycling Company), hosted a special event to recognise the dedication of local waste pickers. These men and women play a crucial role in keeping the municipality clean while also earning an income from collecting and selling recyclable materials.
Described as “unsung heroes” by municipal leaders, the waste pickers help KSD move closer to its vision of becoming one of the cleanest cities in the region. Their work not only improves the local environment but also provides an important source of livelihood, especially in communities facing economic challenges.
The gathering also formed part of Women’s Month celebrations, with female waste pickers receiving protective waistcoats and cosmetics packs as a gesture of appreciation for their efforts.
Executive Mayor Cllr G.N. Nelani encouraged residents to take responsibility for their surroundings, stressing that a clean city benefits everyone. He also issued a warning to those dumping waste illegally, saying such actions will lead to penalties.
