On 16 September 2025 King Sabata Dalindyebo (KSD) Municipality’s law enforcement officials have arrested six suspects linked to the vandalism of municipal electrical infrastructure in Mthatha. The coordinated operation took place in the early hours of 13 September 2025 across several Mthatha locations, following anonymous tip-offs from the public.
What Happened
Officers targeted hotspots across the city, beginning at the Soweto informal settlement behind Mthatha Plaza, where two suspects were caught with stolen copper material. The investigation expanded to the Vulindlela Industrial Area, leading to the arrest of a foreign national buyer also in possession of stolen equipment.
Further raids in Bhongweni and Payne locations yielded more copper material and additional suspects. Officials confirmed that the accused were behind the burning of mini-substations and kiosks within KSD.
Official Response
Executive Mayor Nyaniso Nelani praised the work of municipal officers and community members who shared information:
“The successful apprehension of these suspects is a testament to the dedication and vigilance of our officials and the invaluable cooperation of residents. Vandalism of electrical infrastructure disrupts essential services and endangers lives. We will continue working tirelessly to ensure such criminal activities are eradicated.”
This shows the third major breakthrough since November 2024, with similar mass arrests made in February and August this year.
Community Impact
Municipal officials said the arrests show the ongoing fight against copper theft, which contributes to blackouts and costly repairs. By cutting off supply chains and arresting repeat offenders, the municipality aims to improve service reliability and safety for residents across Mthatha.
