On the 1st of October 2025, the Department of Community Services launched the King Sabata Dalindyebo (KSD) Waste Pickers Forum at Mthatha Stadium. The gathering honoured the contributions of waste pickers and strengthened sustainable waste management practices across the municipality.
What Happened
The launch brought together municipal leaders, government departments, schools, and private partners to support waste pickers. Executive Mayor G.N. Nelani thanked the Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEDEAT), the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE), and OR Tambo District Municipality for their strong backing.
In addition, Nelani praised Zimele High School for its involvement and applauded waste pickers for their commitment. “Your hard work does not go unnoticed. You play a vital role in building a cleaner and healthier environment,” he said.
To further support the sector, Polyco’s Sibusiso Owen Ndidi delivered a presentation on waste management and handed over Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). This gesture reinforced the municipality’s commitment to worker safety.
Official Response
Director Mr. Guleni emphasized the partnerships behind the initiative. He explained that such collaboration ensures waste pickers receive the recognition they deserve. Moreover, he emphasised the importance of schools teaching children about environmental care.
“We must continue to instill environmental stewardship in schools, because future generations will carry this responsibility,” he said.
The event also acted as a platform to celebrate waste pickers, build partnerships, and strengthen sustainable practices in the KSD Municipality.
Community Impact
