The Department of Special Programmes Unit (SPU) has officially established the King Sabata Dalindyebo (KSD) Municipal Local Drug Action Committee at Mthatha Stadium. The new body aims to unite government, community, and health partners in a coordinated fight against substance abuse across the municipality.

The SPU-led event brought together local leaders, health officials, and community organisations to celebrate a milestone in addressing the growing challenge of substance abuse in KSD. The new committee will drive prevention campaigns, rehabilitation support, and youth awareness initiatives.
“This committee gives our community a united front,” said an SPU representative. “We must work together to save lives and restore hope.”
By formalising partnerships among social services, law enforcement, and civic groups, the initiative seeks to ensure a sustained, community-driven response to addiction and related social issues.
Official Response
Municipal officials expressed confidence that the Local Drug Action Committee will improve coordination between local and provincial efforts. The structure will also support the implementation of South Africa’s National Drug Master Plan at community level.
“Our youth are the future, and protecting them from drugs requires consistent collaboration,” said a KSD municipal spokesperson. “This committee is a step toward building healthier, safer communities.”
The SPU emphasised that continuous engagement with schools, clinics, and community organisations will remain central to the strategy.
