The Special Programmes Unit of King Sabata Dalindyebo Municipality hosted an Elderly Care and Support Programme as part of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign. The event focused on restoring dignity, strengthening social support, and raising awareness about the protection of older persons.
Municipal officials handed over flasks, blankets, and other essential items to elders from surrounding communities. They said the gesture aimed to show respect and offer practical help to those facing daily challenges.
In addition, organisers led education sessions on elderly abuse, discrimination, and the rights of older persons. They encouraged families and communities to report mistreatment and to support elders with compassion. As a result, the programme created a safe space for dialogue, learning, and unity.
The event also included a small celebration with cake cutting, honouring the elders and recognising their role in shaping the community.
H2: Building a Culture of Protection and Care
Officials highlighted the need for continuous community action. They said protecting vulnerable groups requires cooperation between families, local structures, and social services. The programme reinforced this message by promoting respect, inclusion, and social cohesion.
KSD said more outreach activities will follow throughout the 16 Days campaign to support women, children, people with disabilities, and older persons.
