The O.R. Tambo District Municipality has handed over kayaks and bicycles to a local tourism entrepreneur operating across two estuaries in Port St Johns, on 8 November 2025. The support was delivered as part of the district’s continued push to strengthen small tourism enterprises and stimulate the local economy.
What Happened
The municipality presented equipment to a young operator who runs guided estuary experiences in Port St Johns. The tools will expand his adventure offering, helping him attract visitors and create reliable income. Officials said the business has shown strong potential and reflects the district’s strategy to uplift local tourism ventures.
Official Response
Municipal leaders emphasised that tourism remains a key driver of economic growth in the region. “We support abantu bethu thina. Umkhuluwa uvele avathe xa egalela, kukace omdala ebantwaneni. We invest where ambition already exists,” the municipality noted.
Furthermore, they emphasized that the sector provides real livelihoods and sustainable job opportunities.
“That’s why we’ve backed initiative after initiative across the district, giving people the tools to turn ambition into impact.”
Community Impact
The initiative is expected to boost township and rural tourism in Port St Johns by creating new activities for visitors. It also gives local youth access to platforms that can grow into full tourism enterprises. Residents welcomed the handover, saying it sends a clear message that small operators matter.
The municipality added: “This is just one example of many, where our support strengthens not just a business, but a dream in motion.”
