Jacob Zuma Speaks Out at Advocate Muzi Sikhakhane’s Book Launch

Former President Jacob Zuma delivered a reflective and thought-provoking speech at the book launch of Advocate Muzi Sikhakhane, addressing South Africa’s political history, economic struggles, and the role of leadership in shaping the country’s future.

Legacy of the Liberation Struggle

Zuma emphasized South Africa’s unique journey to democracy, recalling how freedom fighters and political prisoners sacrificed their lives for liberation. He highlighted the government of national unity (GNU), which he described as a groundbreaking approach to unifying a deeply divided nation after years of apartheid oppression.

“We introduced something I hadn’t heard of before—the Government of National Unity. It was meant to bring peace and ensure that all South Africans, regardless of their past affiliations, could govern together,” Zuma stated.

Challenges of Economic Disparity

While acknowledging the success of the GNU, Zuma expressed disappointment that economic disparities remain unresolved. He pointed out that while political freedom was achieved, economic freedom has remained elusive for many South Africans.

“One of the issues is the economy because the economy of the country remained unequal. The life remained unequal, and during our freedom, we became prisoners of inequality,” Zuma said, lamenting the fact that many South Africans still live in poverty despite the end of apartheid.

Criticism of the ANC and Formation of a New Party

Zuma, who has been a lifelong member of the African National Congress (ANC), admitted that he felt the party had changed from what he once knew. This, he explained, was one of the reasons he had chosen to establish a new political movement.

“I never thought I would one day say I’m establishing a political party in South Africa after fighting for freedom. But the ANC is no longer what I knew it to be,” Zuma stated, reinforcing his belief that the country’s political direction required serious reevaluation.

Call for South Africans to Unite

Despite his criticism, Zuma emphasized the importance of South Africans working together to build a better future. He called for renewed dialogue, urging citizens to read, reflect, and engage in meaningful discussions about the country’s path forward.

“It is not impossible to create a truly united South Africa. We need to talk about what we know, acknowledge our struggles, and work toward equality. The suffering of the past should not continue today,” he urged.

Speaking at Advocate Muzi Sikhakhane’s book launch, Zuma’s speech was both a reflection on South Africa’s political evolution and a challenge to current leadership and citizens to take charge of shaping the country’s future. He ended by thanking those who continue to document the nation’s history and encouraged people to be active participants in creating the South Africa they envision.
