From 24 to 26 October 2025, the Eastern Cape Department of Health, in partnership with Operation Smile South Africa, hosted a three-day dental outreach at Mthatha Regional Hospital. The programme helped hundreds of residents from Mthatha, Mqanduli, and nearby areas.
What Happened
Over three days, 993 patients received free dental care. On 24 October 2025, 287 people were attended to. On 25 October 2025, 365 more came through. Even on a rainy Sunday, 332 patients still showed up. The turnout showed how much communities value accessible dental services.
Official Response
Health officials praised the success of the outreach. They said the partnership aims to bring essential health services closer to rural communities. Operation Smile South Africa also thanked the hospital team for its dedication and care.
Community Impact
Local resident Ashanti Mboneli said “We are thankful as the Mthatha and Mqanduli community; we came all the way from Mqanduli.”
