Following the Qunu protest in Ward 19, the O.R. Tambo District Municipality has confirmed that work is already underway to restore water supply. The plan is designed not only to fix the Noyiya Scheme but also to secure the infrastructure against future sabotage. Here’s how the process is unfolding step by step.
Step 1: Addressing the Noyiya Scheme
The Noyiya Scheme, damaged by repeated vandalism, is being revived by converting its system to electricity for greater reliability.
Step 2: Eskom Readiness
Eskom is on standby and will power the scheme immediately once permanent security is in place.
Step 3: Deploying Security Teams
Security personnel are already being rolled out to Ward 19 and other vulnerable schemes to prevent further sabotage.
Step 4: Repair Work in Motion
All technical parts needed have been sourced, and repair teams are actively restoring the scheme. Work is happening now, not just planned.
Step 5: Timeline for Completion
If uninterrupted, the Noyiya Scheme will be fully operational within 30 days, combining repair and protection at the same time.
Step 6: Backup from Lwalweni Scheme
The Lwalweni Scheme continues to provide water to Lwalweni Villages 1 and 2, with its pump house being reinforced for long-term service.
Step 7: Combating Criminal Sabotage
Law enforcement is targeting those behind infrastructure vandalism, but communities are urged to also help safeguard facilities.
The frustrations of Qunu residents are acknowledged, but the district assures them that restoration is underway. With security, Eskom support, and active repairs, taps are expected to flow again within a month this time, protected for the future.
