On 30 July 2025, the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) hosted a Youth Empowerment Dialogue at Sipilini Community Hall, KwaBhaca. The event brought together organisations such as SEDA, NYDA, DEDEAT, Alfred Nzo District Municipality, and the Department of Social Development to help youth access funding, training, and mentorship.
“Speakers encouraged young people to take initiative in exploring available government and community programmes, as well as training opportunities.”
Step 1: Attend empowerment dialogues in your community
Events like the Youth Empowerment Dialogue provide direct access to government agencies and partners offering business support. Youth heard from KwaBhaca Mall, Permaculture Co-operative, and the Participatory Guarantee System about how to access services.
Step 2: Connect with key stakeholders
Speakers explained how youth can register businesses, apply for grants, and join mentorship programmes. Organisations like SEDA and NYDA shared details on the types of funding available for start-ups.
Step 3: Apply for funding and training opportunities
Young people were encouraged to explore available government and community programmes. DEDEAT and the Department of Agriculture offered guidance on agricultural business support, while the Department of Social Development highlighted youth-focused initiatives.
Step 4: Build a strong network
The dialogue created a valuable space for networking with mentors, community leaders, and fellow entrepreneurs. Participants shared ideas and built connections that could support their ventures.
Step 5: Learn from those who have succeeded
Five young beneficiaries of NYDA and SEDA funding shared how they overcame challenges in their farming businesses. Their success stories inspired attendees to take the first step toward starting their own ventures.
Why it matters
Youth unemployment remains a critical issue in South Africa. By giving young people practical steps to start businesses and connecting them with the right resources, the dialogue aims to reduce unemployment and grow the local economy.
