On 21 September 2025, Heritage Month celebrations came alive in Buthongweni village, Ngqeleni, where a vibrant horse racing event was hosted under Ward 24.The occasion, drew crowds of spectators as riders showcased their skills in a traditional sport that continues to unite communities.

The race was organised under the leadership of Ward 24 Councillor Nomatiti, forming part of Nyandeni Local Municipality’s Heritage Month programme. Several horses competed in the thrilling contest, with participants vying for the top spot as spectators cheered loudly from the sidelines.

The event carried the festive spirit of ibiluvuyo noChulumanco (joy and celebration), honouring cultural heritage while reviving one of the region’s most beloved traditions.

“Heritage Month is about honouring who we are and what connects us. Horse racing is part of our cultural fabric, and today’s celebration shows the pride of our people,” Nomatiti said.

The organisers also extended gratitude to participants, with Siyi Nyanda kaNtontela offering the traditional salute, “huntshu kubathath’inxaxheba”, celebrating all who took part.
