The sun-soaked shores of Mthatha Dam turned somber on Sunday when two 12-year-old boys from Matyeba Locality, Tsolo drowned while enjoying a day of swimming with friends. Jabulani Mthethwa and Sipho Nkosi, full of laughter and the promise of youth, vanished beneath the surface of the mighty Mthatha Dam, forever silencing their innocent voices.

Witnesses reported that the boys were playing in the water, their joy evident to all around, when they suddenly disappeared. Panic swept through the group, and the alarm was sounded. The local authorities responded swiftly, launching a search as the community grew increasingly anxious. Initial efforts by the Mthatha K9 Unit faced challenges due to poor visibility in the foggy waters, leaving families grasping at hope.

On Monday, 24 February, the Lusikisiki K9 Search and Rescue Unit, led by Sergeants Makhosonke and Nduva, resumed the daunting task. As they navigated the depths of Mthatha Dam, the weight of their mission was palpable. After hours of diligent searching, they emerged with the heartbreaking news—both boys had been found, but unfortunately, they were dead.

“The commitment displayed by these members reflects the very essence of our duty to serve and protect,” Major General Modishana remarked, lauding the tireless efforts of the rescue team. While the community mourns the loss of Jabulani and Sipho, their spirits are woven into the lives of those who loved them, as heartfelt memories linger on the shores where laughter once danced with the waves.

The authorities urge parents and legal guardians to monitor children and educate them about the dangers of water.
