A major milestone for rural development was celebrated on Friday as the Umzimvubu Local Municipality officially handed over the newly completed Gugwini Community Hall in Ward 3, Emaxebeni. The infrastructure project, which brought together more than 400 residents, marks a significant step in improving community facilities and creating local employment.

Speaking at the ceremony, Acting Mayor Cllr Ntombizandile Garane said the hall symbolised progress and shared responsibility.

We are a municipality that has been involved in various wards handing over projects that have been completed this financial year, and we are here in Gugwini today to officially open this hall, saying that it is now for the residents of this village to use and protect.

Traditional leader Nkosi Nogula welcomed the new hall with enthusiasm, noting that residents had for years endured harsh weather while meeting outdoors. “This hall has lifted us out of poverty. We are now free from the cold and wind when we gather,” he said.

In addition to the social benefits, the construction of the hall created 19 job opportunities for local residents—an important injection into the rural economy of the area.

The municipality says it will continue to roll out infrastructure projects that improve the quality of life in underdeveloped communities like Gugwini.
