The Government Communication and Information System (GCIS), in partnership with Alfred Nzo District Municipality and Umzimvubu Local Municipality, hosted a Government Exhibition Day at the Nophoyi Thusong Service Centre 26 September 2025. The event focused on educating residents about available government services and strengthening direct engagement between state departments and the community.
WHAT HAPPENED
The initiative formed part of GCIS’s national mandate to enhance visibility, promote access to services, and ensure transparency in government operations. The exhibition aimed to bridge the gap between citizens and institutions by bringing departments directly to rural residents.
Numerous departments and agencies were present, including Home Affairs, SASSA, Employment and Labour, Health, Social Development, Agriculture (primary animal health care), Statistics South Africa, the IEC, National Research Foundation, Road Accident Fund, SA Youth Harambee, and the Municipal Demarcation Board. Residents were able to apply for services, receive assistance, and access information without having to travel to urban centres.
“This exhibition demonstrates government’s commitment to making services accessible to everyone, especially in rural communities,” a GCIS official noted during the event.
OFFICIAL RESPONSE
Alfred Nzo District Municipality commended the collaboration, stating that the event mentioned the importance of responsive governance in hard-to-reach areas. Officials from Umzimvubu Local Municipality added that the exhibition reflected government’s drive to uphold accountability and citizen participation.
COMMUNITY IMPACT
For residents of Nophoyi and surrounding villages, the exhibition provided a one-stop hub of services that would otherwise require multiple trips to towns. Elderly residents, in particular, benefited from on-the-spot SASSA and health support, while youth engaged directly with SA Youth Harambee and Labour Department officials on employment opportunities.
Community members expressed appreciation for the initiative, with some urging that similar events be held more frequently.
