Government and Security Agencies Join Forces to Combat School Violence

School violence and abuse have long been identified by welfare and education experts as significant factors leading to premature dropout rates and psychological disorders among learners. This sentiment was echoed during a recent campaign against school violence held at the Sehushe Commercial School in Libode.

The event, a collaboration between private security firm Tyeks Security Services, South African Police Services (SAPS), and the Eastern Cape Department of Education (ECDPE), aimed to empower students and educators with the necessary skills to address issues such as school violence, sexual violence, bullying, and thuggery.

Siya Ngcangisa, spokesperson for Tyeks Security Services, emphasized the national scale of the challenge, stating,

This partnership will restore self-confidence and social awareness among children, letting them know that there’s more to life than abusing each other on school grounds.

Acknowledging Sehushe’s reputation as one of the most problematic schools in the OR Tambo district regarding drugs and break-ins, Superintendent Zolile Ndabetha from Nyandeni Local Municipality attributed the escalation of school violence to victims’ reluctance to report incidents. Ndabetha urged parents to monitor their children’s associations closely, as drug dealers often target vulnerable students.

Parental involvement is the cornerstone in the battle against bullying. By engaging parents, we not only decrease incidents but also foster a culture of accountability. Phumezo Mhletywa, head of school health, safety, and learner enrichment at ECDPE, emphasized the long-term effects of school violence on students’ mental health. Mhletywa underscored the department’s commitment to providing support agents trained to address trauma resulting from violence and abuse, including instances of sexual abuse by teachers.

In summary, the collaborative efforts of government agencies, security forces, and educational institutions underscore a concerted approach to combatting school violence and promoting a safe learning environment for all students.
