The Nkululeko Sports Ground came alive on 08 October as the Joe Gqabi District Municipality hosted the 2025 Golden Games. The event, themed “Active Ageing for a Healthier Life,” celebrated seniors aged 60 and above from Elundini, Senqu, and Walter Sisulu local municipalities.
What Happened
A Day of Colour and Celebration
The morning began with a lively parade by senior teams from across the district. Music, dancing, and joyful chants filled the air, creating an atmosphere of excitement and unity.
Meanwhile, the event ran smoothly under the coordination of the municipality’s Special Programmes Unit (SPU), led by Mainstreaming Manager Mzu Dyantyi. In addition, support messages came from the Older Persons Forum, the Department of Social Development (DSD), and the Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture (DSRAC).
Fun and Fitness Activities
Participants competed in a variety of games, including 100m, 200m, 400m, and 800m races, Jukskei throwing, golf shooting, rugby ball passing, duck walking, and dress-up contests. The field buzzed with laughter and cheers as seniors showcased their strength, teamwork, and enthusiasm. As a result, the event proved that age is no barrier to staying active and connected.
Official Response
Leadership Praises Spirit of Active Ageing
Municipal leaders and partner departments applauded the event for promoting wellness, inclusion, and dignity among older persons.
“These games remind us that age is not a limit to living a healthy and joyful life,” said one organiser. “Our seniors continue to inspire us through their energy and participation.”
Moreover, the Joe Gqabi District Municipality reaffirmed its ongoing commitment to supporting active ageing and social wellness. The Golden Games, they said, form part of a broader programme to keep seniors healthy, engaged, and valued in their communities.
Community Impact
Strengthening Bonds and Building Unity
The Golden Games not only encouraged fitness but also strengthened social ties. Seniors, families, and community members shared a day filled with joy and appreciation.
For many participants, the games offered a chance to reconnect with old friends and make new ones. Therefore, the event became more than a competition—it was a celebration of life, health, and togetherness.
Local residents praised the municipality for creating a platform that celebrates senior citizens and promotes positive ageing.
“It was a day of happiness, laughter, and love,” said a participant from Elundini. “We felt valued and appreciated.”
