Learners at Glenvista Primary School in Johannesburg have taken a major step into the digital age after receiving smart learning tablets from the Department of Basic Education.
On Thursday, July 31, 2025, Minister of Basic Education Siviwe Gwarube and Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies Solly Malatsi visited the school to personally hand over the devices. The initiative forms part of the government’s wider plan to bring digital tools into classrooms, especially in schools with limited resources.
The tablet donation, made possible through support from both public and private partners, is aimed at helping children learn with modern tools and better prepare them for a fast-changing world.
Speaking to learners and teachers, Minister Gwarube underlined the value of digital skills and access to technology in boosting learning and making education more effective. She stressed the need to close the digital gap so that no child is left behind.
Minister Malatsi echoed the message, highlighting the government’s continued push to improve digital access in schools. He said plans are in motion to supply more schools with tablets in the Free State, Western Cape, and Eastern Cape provinces.
The smart tablets are expected to open new learning opportunities, improve access to educational content, and support South Africa’s move toward a more connected, digital-ready school system.
