The African National Congress (ANC) has welcomed the voluntary step-aside decision taken by Dr Malusi Gigaba. The announcement was made on 19 November 2025, following Gigaba’s recent court appearance. The ANC says the move strengthens its renewal agenda and defends the organisation’s integrity.
What Happened
Dr Malusi Gigaba informed the party that he would step aside from all responsibilities after appearing in court. The ANC says he acted without pressure and followed the organisation’s constitution and the resolutions of its 55th National Conference.
The step-aside rule requires members formally charged to remove themselves from duties as a demonstration of accountability and ethical leadership.
Official Response
According to the statement, the ANC views Gigaba’s decision as proof of his respect for internal processes and commitment to organisational discipline. Acting national spokesperson Nonceba Mhlauli said the step reinforced the party’s renewal agenda and affirmed that leadership “must be beyond reproach.”
“We thank cde Gigaba for his leadership and discipline. His decision strengthens the ANC’s collective efforts to rebuild trust, reinforce accountability, and demonstrate that no individual stands above the organisation,” the statement reads.
The ANC emphasised that the step-aside rule does not assume guilt but ensures the organisation protects public confidence while legal matters unfold.
Community Impact
The party believes the move will boost public trust during a period of heightened scrutiny over political accountability. Leaders say the decision helps stabilise internal structures and reinforces expectations that members must uphold the organisation’s values at all times.
