Gallants Edge Durban City on Penalties to Reach Nedbank Cup Semis

Marumo Gallants secured their spot in the Nedbank Cup semifinals with a hard-fought 4-1 victory on penalties over Durban City at Chatsworth Stadium on Sunday afternoon, following a goalless 120 minutes.

The Motsepe Foundation Championship side proved to be a stubborn opponent for Gallants, who controlled large parts of the game but struggled to convert their dominance into goals.

Gallants started brightly, with Junior Dion missing an early opportunity in the third minute. Despite applying pressure, they found it difficult to break down Durban City’s resilient defense, as the home side opted for a more cautious approach.

The match lost momentum midway through the first half, with neither team creating clear-cut chances. Gallants picked up the tempo after the water break, pushing for an opener, but Durban City held firm, ensuring the score remained 0-0 at halftime.

The second half saw more urgency from both teams. Menzi Ndwandwe came close for Durban City in the 50th minute with a free-kick that landed on the roof of the net. Gallants continued to dominate possession but lacked the finishing touch, while Durban City threatened on the counter, with Ruzaigh Gamaldien almost snatching a late winner in the 87th minute.

With neither side finding the breakthrough, extra time was required. However, the additional 30 minutes failed to separate the teams, leading to a penalty shootout.

Durban City’s Saziso Magawana and Athini Jodwana missed their spot-kicks, while Gallants kept their composure from 12 yards, converting four penalties to seal a 4-1 win and progress to the semifinals.

Gallants will now shift their focus to the next stage of the competition as they continue their quest for silverware in the Nedbank Cup.
