Born out of frustration during the 2020 lockdown, Sub City Music and Media is now a symbol of resilience and purpose in the Eastern Cape. Founded by Nkululeko Athenkosi Ngwadla, better known as Lekko the DJ, the platform was inspired by his struggle with unemployment despite holding three qualifications.

“Sub City was created from necessity and passion,” says Ngwadla. “It’s a way to not only empower myself but to create opportunities for local artists and families in my community.”

Today, Sub City offers music production, event management, artist development, and outreach programs across the Alfred Nzo District. The name “Sub City” reflects their roots in underground music and their mission to uplift emerging voices.

For events like the Roots Music Festival, the team follows a holistic artist selection process — evaluating talent, consistency, values, and community support. “We focus on quality, professionalism, and authenticity,” he explains.

Beyond the stage, Sub City’s outreach work has left a lasting impact — especially in Betshwana, Ngwadla’s hometown. Following a successful event, they provided essential goods to families in need. “That moment reminded us why we do this. Giving back isn’t an afterthought; it’s core to our identity.”

Looking ahead, Sub City is preparing for a youth entrepreneurship and music business workshop this September. The goal: equip young artists with tools for business planning, marketing, and sustainable careers. “We want participants to leave empowered and connected,” says Ngwadla.

But Sub City’s strength isn’t his alone — it’s a collective effort. The vision is shared and executed by a committed team of changemakers:

Together, they manage projects, organize events, and drive outreach that reaches far beyond music. From stage setup to food drives, they are the backbone of a movement changing lives in Mount Ayliff and beyond.

The journey hasn’t been without challenges — especially public criticism. “But my relationship with God and the positivity around me keep me grounded,” says Ngwadla. “Our mission is too important to stop now.”

Sub City Music and Media is more than a platform — it’s a purpose. With faith, a strong team, and a passion for transformation, Lekko the DJ and his crew are proving that community, creativity, and consistency can build something truly powerful in the Eastern Cape.
