The Eastern Cape Department of Health, led by MEC Ntandokazi Capa, in partnership with Operation Smile South Africa and the National Department of Health, has brought new hope to families across the province. Through an annual surgical mission at Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital in Mthatha, more than 30 children received free cleft lip and palate surgeries, transforming their lives and restoring confidence.

What Happened

The medical mission, held in Mthatha, assessed over 40 patients from various districts. A multidisciplinary team of volunteer specialists conducted about 30 surgeries to correct cleft lip and palate conditions.

Alongside the surgical program, an oral health outreach at Mthatha Regional Hospital provided free dental care to over 1,500 residents. More than 50 dental professionals delivered essential services such as screenings, cleanings, fillings, and extractions. In addition, oral hygiene education sessions were held at 13 schools, teaching learners about preventive dental care.

This initiative forms part of an ongoing campaign to expand access to specialized healthcare and raise awareness about treatable oral conditions.

Official Response

MEC Ntandokazi Capa applauded the initiative as a model of effective public-private collaboration.

“Safe surgery and good oral health are essential for well-being and dignity,” she said.
“Our goal is to ensure that no child misses school and no adult misses work because of oral health challenges or stigma from a treatable condition.”

She emphasized that prevention, treatment, and education remain central to the department’s mission of achieving universal health access.

Operation Smile South Africa’s Executive Director, Sarah Scarth, echoed these sentiments, featured the long-term impact of the partnership.

Community Impact

Families of the children who benefited from the surgeries expressed gratitude for the initiative, describing it as life changing. Many said their children now have a renewed sense of confidence and belonging.

The outreach also improved oral health awareness in the community, particularly among learners. Local healthcare workers noted that these campaigns help reduce preventable dental diseases and promote early treatment.

The partnership between the provincial government and Operation Smile South Africa continues to strengthen local medical capacity, ensuring that more residents receive specialized care close to home.
