Mrs. Nophumzile Silangwe from Dutyini Location, Ward 30 in Bizana, under the Winnie Madikizela Mandela Local Municipality, now collects and sells scrap metal to survive. The former ward councillor says she started this work out of desperation to feed her family and send her children to school after losing her political position.
What Happened
Silangwe began collecting scrap metal and selling it in Durban because her family had nothing to eat. “I had no choice but to find a way to provide for my children,” she said.
She once served as a councillor under the African National Congress (ANC). However, she claims that she was unfairly removed from her position. “After being removed, things became worse. I went to the municipality for help, but I received none,” she said.

Silangwe lives with 13 family members, none of whom are employed. “I even went to the Speaker’s office to ask for help because my house walls were collapsing, but nothing changed,” she added.
Struggles After the Storm
Her situation worsened when storms damaged her home, leaving her family exposed. “Officials came after the storm and gave me five sponges and some food. They promised to return and assist further, but they never came back,” she said. The damage left her home unsafe and in urgent need of repair.
Challenges in Her Work
Collecting scrap metal is tough work. Silangwe often sleeps outside while waiting for trucks that transport the metal to Durban. “Transport from my home to town is expensive. Anyone who wants to do this work must build good relations with truck drivers to get their materials moved,” she explained.
Community Impact
Silangwe’s story shows the struggles faced by many rural women who depend on informal work to survive. Her determination to support her family despite hardship inspires others in Bizana. She continues to hope that someone will step forward to help rebuild her life.
