Maimane will appear on the ballot in 2024 as part of an umbrella body, to unearth and elect home-grown leadership in communities across the country. This will be the first time Maimane will contend an election at the ballot box since he resigned as a leader of the DA in 2019. The businessman will be running under this umbrella body and will seek out the best candidates to join him in running for election in 2024.

During the 2021 Local Government Elections, Maimane and the One South Africa movement (OSA) trained, endorsed and campaigned for independent candidates and community structures across South Africa. According to the organisation, 750 000 votes were cast for independent candidates, with more than 150 elected. However, OSA believes Parliament will pass a law that makes it “very difficult” for independents to contest elections.

In 2019 Mmusi Maimane announced his resignation from the DA and parliament less than 24 hours after announcing he was stepping down as leader of the party. He took to Twitter to say he would continue to serve the people of South Africa.

“I have worked tirelessly to build the project of One SA for All. It’s been my greatest honour to serve the people of SA and I will continue to do so. “I have today resigned from the DA and parliament. Thank you to the people of this country for your faith in our nation. God bless SA.”

When Mmusi visited MacG’s podcast he explained and shared his insights on crucial matters such as corrupt leaders.

I want to serve this country the best that I can help build a nation that prospers for everybody. – said Maimane.
