Congolese national Coki Chicha Juslain, was sentenced to life by the Mthatha Regional Court on 2 September 2024, for the brutal rape of 28-year-old woman on a job scam
A heinous crime met its match as Juslain, a 36-year-old Congolese national was sentenced to life imprisonment for raping a then 28-year-old woman in 2020, The victim, a hitchhiker, was lured with a job promise and brutally assaulted in Juslain’s shop, this led to the perpetrator’s manipulation and violence rewarded with a life sentence, ensuring he will no longer harm innocent lives.
The SAPS reported that, the Congolese man offered a lift to a hitch-hiking young lady on 27 October 2020. The victim had been travelling from Mqanduli towards Mthatha when she met what would be her worst nightmare, Juslain had promised the victim a job in his shop in Vidgesville, when they both agreed to meet the following day.
In an unfortunate event on the following day, the unsuspecting victim, went to Juslain’s shop and upon arrival was locked inside a burglared room. He then proceeded to rape and threatened her with a knife, the victim was released after being raped and immediately went to Mthatha Central Police Station to opened a case of rape.
When asked about the ability of the police to protect South African citizens and the prioritisation of law enforcement to undocumented foreign nationals, Captain Welile Matyolo of the Eastern Cape SAPS ensured that they are working around the clock to close that gap.
“The police are working with various stakeholders, including Home Affairs, to identify and address undocumented foreign nationals through multi-disciplinary operations. We prioritise protecting and serving citizens while recognising individual responsibility for personal safety. The SAPS also collaborates with immigration officials to identify documented and undocumented individuals, while deportation is not our primary responsibility, we assist when needed, proving interdepartmental cooperation to achieve common goals,” Said Matyolo.
The perpetrator was arrested later that day and was charged for rape, he was later denied bail on his first appearance and was remanded in custody on 30 November 2020. After several appearances, the case got transfered to the regional court on 9 April 2021. Juslain was then sentenced to life imprisonment by Mthatha Regional court on 27 August 2024.
OR Tambo District Commissioner Major General Phumzile Cetyana welcomed the sentence and congratulated the investigating officer, for securing a conviction, and in ensuring that the rapist is removed from the society.
“This sends a strong message and a lesson to sexual abusers that these acts of abusing the vulnerable will never be tolerated,” concluded Cetyana
