Foot and Mouth Disease campaign reaches Nyaka Village farmers

Date:

Farmers in Nyaka Village, Ward 18, attended a Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) awareness campaign on the 1st of January 2026, aimed at protecting livestock and strengthening rural livelihoods. The campaign was led by the Eastern Cape Department of Agriculture and the Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Local Municipality.

What Happened

The awareness event focused on educating livestock owners about how to detect and prevent the spread of FMD in their herds. Veterinary officials and community leaders discussed:

  • Early signs of infection
  • Biosecurity protocols
  • Legal requirements for moving livestock
  • The risks of moving animals without permission

MEC for Agriculture, Hon. Nonkqubela Khontsiwe, addressed the gathering and issued a firm reminder:

“Do not move your animals, except for slaughter, unless you have received the necessary permission,” she said.

She also stressed that farmers must report any signs of sickness in their livestock immediately to their local veterinary office.

Key Guidelines for Farmers

  • Do not move animals without permission
  • Report illness in livestock immediately
  • Contact veterinary officials before selling animals
  • Apply strict biosecurity on farms

These measures are part of the provincial strategy to contain any outbreak and maintain economic stability in farming communities.

Community Support and Livelihoods

The Municipality has reaffirmed its support for agricultural programmes that boost food security and sustainable livelihoods. Officials pledged continued collaboration with rural farmers to protect animal health and the local economy.
