Former Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) deputy president Nyiko Floyd Shivambu, who joined the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) on 15 August 2024, is facing heavy criticism for his recent visit to fugitive pastor Shepherd Bushiri in Malawi. The controversial appearance has been slammed by political leaders and legal experts as undermining the integrity of South Africa’s justice system.

Shivambu was seen attending a church service at Bushiri’s Enlightened Christian Gathering (ECG) Church, where he was publicly acknowledged by the self-proclaimed prophet. Bushiri fled South Africa in 2020 while facing serious charges of fraud and money laundering worth over R100 million. He remains a fugitive, having absconded while out on bail.

Justice Minister Ronald Lamola condemned Shivambu’s actions, calling them “disrespectful” to the country’s legal institutions. “For a senior political figure to fraternise with someone who evaded trial is an insult to our justice system,” said Lamola in a statement.

Despite now being a member of MKP, Shivambu’s visit was not sanctioned by the party, which has issued a statement distancing itself from the incident. “The MK Party was not involved in this visit and does not condone engagement with fugitives from justice,” the party said.

The backlash has stirred intense debate ahead of the 2025 elections, with some analysts suggesting Shivambu’s actions could damage MKP’s credibility. While Shivambu has not issued a formal response, party insiders claim the visit was conducted in his personal capacity.

The Department of Justice reaffirmed its position that Bushiri remains a wanted individual and that efforts to extradite him from Malawi are ongoing. “We are pursuing all legal avenues to ensure that Mr. Bushiri stands trial in South Africa,” Lamola added.

As public pressure mounts, the incident has sparked wider conversations about political accountability, the influence of religious leaders, and the expectations of integrity for those holding public office.
