  • Construction of Temporary Residential Units at Maydene Farm: Newly built units at Maydene Farm represent ongoing recovery efforts for flood-affected families in the OR Tambo District, with four homes completed daily as symbols of resilience.
  • Government Officials Assess Progress on Ground: Deputy Ministers visited the area to personally review the progress of recovery efforts, meet affected families, and ensure accountability among service providers.
  • Focus on Holistic Community Reconstruction: The recovery initiative aims not only to provide housing but also to restore dignity by addressing water, sanitation, and social support services in the affected communities.

Rows of newly built Temporary Residential Units now stand at Maydene Farm in Mthatha, King Sabata Dalindyebo Municipality, representing a visible sign of recovery for families affected by recent floods in the OR Tambo District. With four new homes being completed each day, the site is becoming a symbol of resilience and hope.

On Tuesday, Deputy Ministers visited the area not to deliver speeches, but to take responsibility and assess progress first hand. The delegation met families who had lost their homes, reviewed the state of water, sanitation, and social support services, and pressed service providers for greater accountability.

The visit was part of government’s ongoing commitment to rebuild communities and restore dignity to those hardest hit by natural disasters. Local municipalities, including Nyandeni, King Sabata Dalindyebo, Kumkani Mhlontlo, Ingquza Hill, and Port St Johns, are working alongside provincial and national structures to ensure that recovery efforts bring lasting solutions.

The Eastern Cape Office of the Premier, together with the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta), has emphasised that the Maydene Farm project is not only about houses but about rebuilding lives. Officials assured residents that government presence on the ground would remain consistent until all affected families are fully resettled.
