The Eastern Cape Provincial Government, in partnership with the OR Tambo District Municipality and the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), has begun relocating families displaced by the June 2025 floods in Mthatha to Temporary Residential Units (TRUs) at Mayden Farm.
The first group of 25 families has already moved into the newly established units, with more households expected to follow as additional TRUs become available. This intervention is aimed at restoring stability, dignity and safety to those affected while permanent housing solutions are developed.
To ease the transition, SASSA is providing each relocated family with a R2,700 voucher to cover immediate needs. The support is part of government’s broader relief efforts for flood victims across the province. So far, around 120 TRUs have been completed and occupied in Mnquma Local Municipality as part of the same programme.
Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane praised the relocation effort, describing it as proof of the province’s resilience and teamwork. He said the main priority was to restore dignity and stability to families who lost their homes in the floods, and that moving them to Mayden Farm would ensure no one was left behind. He added that the support from SASSA would play an important role in helping families rebuild their lives.
The Provincial Government expressed gratitude to social partners, humanitarian organisations and local leaders who played a key role in the process.
