Five students were arrested on 4 June after violent protests broke out at Walter Sisulu University’s Nelson Mandela Drive Campus.

The students, who are set to appear in the Mthatha Magistrates’ Court today, face charges of arson, public violence, malicious injury to property, and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Four police officers were injured during efforts to contain the unrest. They were treated and discharged from hospital the same day.

According to police, the campus and surrounding areas have since returned to a state of calm. Public Order Policing units remain on site to ensure continued stability.

Police have warned that any future disruptions or illegal gatherings will be met with legal action. Authorities called on students and community members to raise concerns through lawful and peaceful means.

Police emphasised their responsibility to protect lives and property, adding that any violence or intimidation will not be tolerated.
