The Mgoduswa family of Thwazi, near Flagstaff, is grappling with unimaginable grief after a fire claimed the lives of three family members on July 7. The blaze, which broke out in the early morning hours, has left the community in shock and mourning.
Reports indicate that the fire originated near Elujecweni Junior Secondary School and quickly spread towards the Mgoduswa home. Isthandile Mgoduswa, a Grade R student, and Andile Mgoduswa, a Grade Four student, were among the first to encounter the fire. Concerned for their safety, their mother, Thakazi Mgoduswa, rushed to rescue them but sustained severe injuries in the process.
A family member recounted the harrowing experience, explaining that the trio was immediately taken to Holycross Hospital. The two children were later transferred to Mthatha Hospital for further treatment. Tragically, all three succumbed to their injuries, passing away three days apart from each other, beginning with the youngest.
“The family is facing a very hard time,” said a close relative. “Apart from the emotional turmoil, the funeral arrangements are not what we had ever anticipated. We got the news the next morning that at Mthatha Hospital, the youngest could speak no more before the child passed away, not knowing that we would be struck with the same news over different days respectively.”
The family has issued a heartfelt plea for assistance from both government agencies and private citizens as they struggle to cope with this devastating loss and the financial burden of funeral arrangements.
The story is still developing.
