Farmers from Bathurst and surrounding areas gathered at Peninsula Farm for an Information Day on Pineapple Production hosted by the Department of Agriculture. The event aimed to strengthen farmer knowledge, promote collaboration, and improve production quality across the district.
Their Story
The session, coordinated by Extension Officer Konjiswa Sali and supported by Nontsikelelo Khatshaza, the Department’s Deputy Director for District Coordination (Ndlambe & Makana), brought together experts and stakeholders from various agricultural sectors.
Speakers included:
- Hercules Dupreez from Kynoch Fertilizer Company, who discussed fertilizer solutions and shared tips on improving soil health and crop performance.
- Simbongile Lingishe, a Horticulture Scientist, who provided practical advice on effective pineapple management.
- Vusumzi Pefile from Rural Development, who explained land reform initiatives and available farmer support programmes.
The Event
Deputy Director Khatshaza gave a detailed presentation on the Ilima/Letsema (Ilima Lokulima) Programme, which provides production inputs and support to improve food security. She also outlined opportunities in aggregation, market access, and farmer development services offered by the Department.
Farmer Chris Gidana of Orange Grove Farm, also Chairperson of the Bathurst and Port Alfred Farmers Association, urged producers to work together and support smallholder farmers.
“When we lift others, the whole industry grows stronger,” said Gidana.
Thembekile Mbunge, Local Economic Development Officer from Ndlambe Municipality, affirmed partnerships between government, agribusiness, and farmers, calling them vital for a sustainable local agricultural economy.
